Rossum, whose role as Fiona Gallagher on the Showtime hit Shameless from 2011 to 2019 put her on the map as a star, was recently announced as the latest casting for Apple TV Plus’ upcoming series. Rossum will be joining Tom Holland, who will also serve as executive producer, and Amanda Seyfried as the leads for the upcoming series.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Rossum will play the mother of Holland’s character, a woman who described is as “always looking for a man to fulfill her dreams of salvation.” Besides the show’s leads, not much is known regarding what the show will be about. The only other known details about the show are that Akiva Goldsman, known best for his work as a writer for A Beautiful Mind, will serve as writer and executive producer while Kornél Mundruczó, best known for directing Pieces of a Woman, is slated to direct the entire 10-episode season.

As far as what the show will be about, again, not much has been revealed. The little info that has been publicized is that it will adapt true stories about those who have struggled with and accepted their mental illness. Rossum’s work as Gallagher on Shameless made her pretty much the perfect choice for a show like this seeing how she expertly played a character who had to overcome plenty of emotional trauma caused by her upbringing and broken home.

In recent years, the topic of mental health has been getting a lot more exposure in part because it’s clear as day that those who suffer from it not only should have their voices heard but that doing so can help them feel more comfortable with themselves. The discussion has become a lot more prevalent thanks to the movies and television shows. Hollywood has delved into the topic for decades. It’s just that nowadays, the exposure is stronger than it’s ever been. Crowded Room will hopefully help those who struggle with mental illness daily open up about what their struggle has been like for them.

Apple TV Plus should know that, even with the topic of mental health getting more spotlight than ever before, this is still a sensitive subject for a lot of people. The one thing they absolutely cannot do for this or any other upcoming show that revolves around mental illness is portray it in a way that makes it feel like those who struggle with mental illness are being exploited. While it’s inspiring that the world is becoming more and more of a safe space for the mentally ill to open up, we must still handle this topic with care at every turn.

Crowded Room will be streamed on Apple TV Plus on a yet-to-be-announced date.
